 215. Mr. F. McGrath Information on Finian McGrath Zoom on Finian McGrath  asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform Information on Michael McDowell Zoom on Michael McDowell  if he will investigate and clarify the case of a person (details supplied). [26893/02]

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. McDowell): Information on Michael McDowell Zoom on Michael McDowell In the course of his correspondence with my Department in recent years, the person in question has made allegations about a number of firms of solicitors and a bank in relation to their dealings with their dealings with him in a property transaction. Where the allegations made could be considered to relate to a criminal matter, my Department has advised the person that he should inform the Garda Síochána or the RUC – now the Police Service of Northern Ireland – so that they could take appropriate action.

Where the allegations made relate to civil matters, I am sure you will appreciate that as the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform I have no function and it would not be appropriate for me to intervene in any way. I also understand that the person in question has been advised of the various measures provided by way of legislation for dealing with complaints against solicitors.
