 143. Mr. Gogarty Information on Paul Nicholas Gogarty Zoom on Paul Nicholas Gogarty  asked the Minister for Education and Science Information on Noel Dempsey Zoom on Noel Dempsey  the reason Ennis educate together national school was refused a temporary building in September; if his officials will re-examine the matter in view of the poor condition of the current premises; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for Education and Science (Mr. N. Dempsey): Information on Noel Dempsey Zoom on Noel Dempsey My Department authorised the school authorities, subject to certain conditions, to prepare revised tender documentation for the proposed provision of improved temporary accommodation.

When this documentation is completed by the school's consultant architect the project will be considered further in the light of the available funds in 2003 for such projects.

In the meantime, the school's board of management should use their devolved grant to deal with any urgent health and safety works.

 144. Mr. Gogarty Information on Paul Nicholas Gogarty Zoom on Paul Nicholas Gogarty  asked the Minister for Education and Science Information on Noel Dempsey Zoom on Noel Dempsey  if his Department will fast track the provision in principle of a new primary school in Newcastle in advance of a local area plan, in view of the cramped conditions in St. Finian's national school and the recent granting of planning permission for 170 houses, with another similar application pending. Minister for Education and Science (Mr. N. Dempsey): Information on Noel Dempsey Zoom on Noel Dempsey My Department has requested South Dublin County Council to reserve a site in the Newcastle Lyons area plan, which my officials have been informed is in the final stages of preparation. The Deputy will appreciate that the valuable information contained in the area plan will contribute to the effective planning of primary school provision in the area.

Pending the production of the area plan and the determining of primary school needs in the area my Department has arranged for health and safety works to be carried out at St. Finian's national school.
