 290. Mr. Wall Information on Jack Wall Zoom on Jack Wall  asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Information on John O'Donoghue Zoom on John O'Donoghue  his efforts to develop the theatre here; the meetings with the Arts Council in regard to such development; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism (Mr. O'Donoghue): Information on John O'Donoghue Zoom on John O'Donoghue My Department is working with the board of the National Theatre and the Office of Public Works to redevelop the National Theatre's premises. My Department's ACCESS scheme will provide €45.71 million over the period 2001 to 2004 towards the development of various forms of artistic and cultural infrastructure around the country, including theatres. The Arts Council, a statutory agency which operates independently of Government on a day-to-day basis, is responsible for the development of art forms, including theatre, and is the principal channel through which Government provides current funding for the arts.
