 284. Mr. Wall Information on Jack Wall Zoom on Jack Wall  asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Information on John O'Donoghue Zoom on John O'Donoghue  if his Department has received an application from a local authority for the refurbishment of a swimming pool (details supplied) in County Kildare; if so, the position of same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24277/02]

Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism (Mr. O'Donoghue): Information on John O'Donoghue Zoom on John O'Donoghue Under the local authority swimming pool programme (2000-2002), which is administered by my Department, there are four stages in a swimming pool project following the [1088] submission of a feasibility study. These, in order of progress, are: preliminary report; contract documents; tender and construction. My Department's technical advisers, the Office of Public Works (OPW), evaluate each stage and local authorities cannot proceed to the next stage of a project unless prior approval issues from my Department. Grant aid is allocated only when tenders have been approved for the project and will be capped at the time of allocation.

In the case of Athy swimming pool, the preliminary report in respect of this project was approved in February. My Department is currently awaiting the submission by Kildare County Council of contract documents for the project. This proposal will be considered further on receipt of this documentation.

In the case of Naas swimming pool, Kildare County Council has submitted the contract documents in respect of this project. These documents are currently with the Office of Public Works for examination and the project will be considered further, once this assessment is complete.
