 226. Mr. Wall Information on Jack Wall Zoom on Jack Wall  asked the Minister for Education and Science Information on Michael Woods Zoom on Michael Woods  the position regarding the Castledermot national school and the proposed purchase of a site for the new development. [3794/02]

Minister for Education and Science (Dr. Woods): Information on Michael Woods Zoom on Michael Woods The property management section of the Office of Public Works is acting on behalf of my Department in relation to site acquisitions generally and is currently exploring the possibility of acquiring a site for Castledermot national school, County Kildare. The school authorities will be kept informed of developments.

 227. Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) Information on John Browne Zoom on John Browne  asked the Minister for Education and Science Information on Michael Woods Zoom on Michael Woods  the way in which his answer to Parliamentary Question No. 1292 of 30 January 2002 explains the instruction to the management of Tullow community school to cease dealing with the selection of a design team, by saying in his answer that all the options for the delivery of modern classroom accommodation will be considered following the appointment of a design team; and the reason the board of management received instructions to cease making a decision on the selection of a design team. [3800/02]

[1659]Minister for Education and Science (Dr. Woods): Information on Michael Woods Zoom on Michael Woods The allocation for post primary buildings in 2002 is €182.31 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Due to the greatly increased level of investment in the post primary buildings area since the Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

I would like to clarify the position for the Deputy. The board of management of Tullow community school did not receive any instructions regarding the appointment of a design team. As community schools are in the direct ownership of the State, my Department is the client in respect of building projects in community schools, and so appoints design teams directly for building projects in community schools.

Question No. 228 answered with Question No. 225.
