68. Mr. B. O'Keeffe   asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he intends to accede to a request from RTÉ for an increase in licence fees consequent on the establishment of Teilifís na Gaeilge. [14355/96]
Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht (Mr. M. Higgins): Deputies will be aware that the television licence fee was increased by £8 with effect from 1 September 1996, the first increase since 1986. Licence fee revenue net of collection costs is paid to RTÉ by way of grant-in-aid for the general purposes of broadcasting. It is not earmarked for any specific purpose such as Teilifís na Gaeilge and it will be a matter for the RTÉ Authority to decide how the additional income resulting from the increase in licence fees is to be used.
