 121. Mr. Sargent Information on Trevor Sargent Zoom on Trevor Sargent  asked the Minister for the Environment Information on Brendan Howlin Zoom on Brendan Howlin  the plans, if any, he has to strengthen the requirement for the use of C3 parameter in determining water quality; and if so, the further plans, if any, he has to include Innismore Estate management project, Ballincollig, County Cork, in the pilot funding for such projects. [12342/96]

Minister for the Environment (Mr. Howlin): Information on Brendan Howlin Zoom on Brendan Howlin The European Communities [1909] (Quality of Water Intended for Human Consumption) Regulations, 1988, which give effect to Council Directive 80/778/EEC in Ireland, prescribe patterns and frequencies of analysis for specified parameters for the purpose of determining the quality of drinking water. The Regulations also stipulate that sanitary authorities must have regard to all factors which may affect such water in determining what monitoring of additional parameters should be undertaken.

There is no proposal at present to amend the Regulations in relation to the C3 category of analysis. The matter will, however, fall due for consideration when Council Directive 80/778/EEC is revised, as has been proposed by the European Commission.

There is no proposal before my Department in relation to the particular project referred to in the Question.
