 77. Miss Flaherty Information on Mary Flaherty Zoom on Mary Flaherty  asked the Minister for Health Information on Michael Noonan Zoom on Michael Noonan  the plans, if any, he has for the further provision of additional hydro-pools and attendant staff in view of the enormous benefit of hydrotherapy in the treatment of rheumatism and arthritis. [9229/96]

Minister for Health (Mr. Noonan,: Information on Michael Noonan Zoom on Michael Noonan Limerick East): Hydrotherapy services are provided at a number of hospitals around the country.

Arthritis and rheumatism sufferers avail of a wide range of therapy services, including, hydrotherapy where appropriate. The Arthritis Foundation, in conjunction with the relevant health board, has assisted in the provision of hydrotherapy pools at a number of locations with the foundation fundraising the capital cost and the health board meeting the ongoing revenue costs.

A joint hospital-Department of Health project team has been established to prepare a planning brief covering various proposed developments at Cappagh Hospital including refurbishment of the hydrotherapy pool.

I will keep the need for additional services under review. Any new developments will be considered in the light of available resources and competing demands.
