 96. Mr. Callely Information on Ivor Callely Zoom on Ivor Callely  asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment Information on Richard Bruton Zoom on Richard Bruton  the direct foreign investment in Ireland for each of the years from 1989 to 1995, if he will give a breakdown of the investment in 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4375/96]

Minister for Enterprise and Employment (Mr. R. Bruton): Information on Richard Bruton Zoom on Richard Bruton Agency data (IDA and Forbairt) on foreign investment in Ireland derives from their statistics on eligible fixed assets (EFA) in companies against which capital grants are paid.

The introduction of employment grant assistance related to the creation of employment which is not directly related to capital investment means that fixed asset investment in these companies is not tracked. The actual amount of foreign direct investment flowing into Ireland is therefore larger than that indicated by the following figures although the trends are probably the same.

EFA: 1989-1995

Year EFA
1989 135
1990 122
1991 228
1992 213
1993 251
1994 200
1995 229

In 1995 the amount of Eligible Fixed Assets is broken down by Nationality Group of Origin as follows:

Nationality Group EFA Paid
United States 182
Other Non-European 23
United Kingdom 8
Germany 6
Other European 10
Total 229
