53.
Mr. Treacy: asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will take steps to have a telephone kiosk provided in the Heywood Road and Fatima area, Clonmel, County Tipperary.
Mr. J. Brennan: I am advised that a kiosk in this area would not pay its way and I cannot, therefore, accede to the Deputy's request.
Mr. Treacy: Would the Minister be good enough to indicate the nature of the inquiries he made to ascertain the reasonableness of setting up a kiosk in this area?
Mr. J. Brennan: My Department is aware of the number of kiosks already in Clonmel—there are five and there is a sixth being erected at the moment. It will be erected, I understand, at Gladstone Street. There is a possibility of a seventh but I doubt if the place the Deputy is interested in would be selected because there is a kiosk within a few hundred yards of that particular [213] location and the income from it is comparatively low.
Mr. Treacy: Has the Minister taken into account that this is quite a big built-up area of working class houses ? There is a new scheme of houses to be erected there soon—some 40 extra.
Mr. J. Brennan: There are 100 houses in the area and 40 to be built but there is a telephone kiosk within 400 yards of the area and the income from it is not such as would make one very enthusiastic about putting up another one.
Mr. Dillon: Would the Minister like to walk half a mile—400 yards there and 400 yards back is 800 yards ?
Mr. J. Brennan: You must admit that with five kiosks there already, a sixth being erected and the possibility of a seventh, the town is being well catered for.
Mr. James Tully: I hope the seventh will not be as far away.
